Time in business: Four years,
What is your business? My fine art caters specifically to interior design for restaurants, hotels, corporations and personal clients. I create fine art photography and do it in a fresh, new way, and then customize the image to suit each designer's specifications.
How did you get started? I was a professional Nurse/ pro photographer in Winnipeg for 20 years and I quit nursing 41/2 years ago to pursue this particular business. I have always been creating innovative photography -- I've won numerous awards ,even asked to teach and judge. I did a lot of research into what interior designers were looking for. I was confident and knew I could make this work as a business, so I sold my house, moved and started to develop my unique niche market.
What got you interested in fine art photography? ART- Lots of art. Monet was one of my favorites. His influence is apparent in my unphotoshopped images that I create in my camera. I attended classes for painting in acrylic media at Emily Carr. In my early 20s, I was introduced to fine art photography through my drawing and painting. I picked up a camera and I was hooked after winning a few creative photography contests in Winnipeg.
Where do you create your fine art photographs? I travel frequently and try to look at natural subjects in a unique way. I have some favorite locations: beaches, Van Dusen Gardens, Stanley Park. I'm always looking for new images. I don't manipulate my images; I'm taking a photo of tree, for instance, and doing it in a unique way.
What makes your art different? By reinforcing the brand, the quality, and its authenticity. Art itself is in the eye of the beholder. Right now there are many beholders worldwide that have already collected my work.I have thousands of different fine art images on my Website, and I can print them in any size. They can be eight feet long to hang behind a bed in a hotel room or mounted for group display in a restaurant. Most of the images I sell are mounted behind Plexiglass -- not much is matted and framed. I also mount them on glass, aluminum, and I'm testing a bamboo mounting. It looks very modern, which my work suits quite well. Another really popular item is the backlit art.
What do you like most about your business? Being treated like a business entrepreneur with an outstanding art product as you would an architect or an interior designer. If you talk about pursuing your passion, this is it. Recognition by a client from Monte Carlo and hearing about our artwork in the lobby of one of the top boutique hotels ranks up there! The look of joy on interior designers faces when they realize that they can incorporate our custom work into their plans right from the get-go. And not have to rush near the end of the project "just to get some art on the walls" It always looks better when it is a collaborative process
How has your business been doing as a result of the economic turn?
Better than ever- consultants, clients and designers have realized that they can buy direct and save a lot by working directly with us and eliminating steps. We complete the whole process of the creation, to shipping, even hanging the work.
What do you like the least about this business? I have an issue with the people that are making more money from the art than the artist themselves. The creator of the art should be properly compensated for their talent and honest, hard work.
Future plans? Other than continuing to add more fine art images to my portfolio and creating new sensations by breaking the conventional rules of fine art photography presentation and design.
What advice for aspiring designers and creatives do you have? -Break the Rules of conventional thought and processes.
Vancouver seems to only embrace contemporary style artwork. I didn't know anyone in the innovative modern design world here, but I knew I could make it work, and this year has been huge. The new clients that we have made here have welcomed us with open eyes. It's a lot of work, but I love the creative aspect of it.My many international clients have outnumbered the local ones as a result of the rule breaking style that I have and their keen eye has recognized the value of my work.
